HPI – Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia

Indonesian Tourist Guide Association – ITGA

Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia (HPI) or Indonesian Tourist Guide Association (ITGA) is an organization which was established based on outcome of Himpunan Duta Wisata Indonesia (HWDI) Convention held at Pertamina Cottages Kuta Beach Bali Indonesia on March 27, 1983. It is the first national convention initiated by Joop Ave, The Former Minister for Tourism, Post and Telecommunication of The Indonesian Republics. The convention was attended by nine provincial guide associations and Bali Guide Association acted as the host.

On October 5th 1988 the Second Convention of Indonesian Tourist Guide Association took place in City of Palembang – South Sumatra and HDWI changed its name become HPI (Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia). Since then, HPI has finally become the only one and only official association of Tourist Guides in Indonesia.
By Hierarchy the National Board of HPI or DPP (Dewan Pimpinan Pusat) is the highest position. Further down lays Provincial Board or DPD (Dewan Pimpinan Daerah), and the last is Regency Board or DPC (Dewan Pimpinan Cabang) constitutes the lowest. DPP HPI currently coordinates 23 DPD HPI’s, 70 DPC HPI’s with total members 12,000 professional tourist guides throughout Indonesia.

HPI or Indonesian Tourist Guide Association (ITGA) is a non-profit, non-political association whose members – throughout Indonesia- consists of Individual Licensed Tourist Guides and Honorary members who have direct attention on tourist guide professionalism. The HPI’s main objectives are to unify, promote and to ensure continuously that its members will be officially recognized as the representatives of nation.

Others are to actively take part in research and tourism development, as well as function as the vehicle to voice out their members’ guide fees and social welfares. Not only does HPI offer services such as: providing necessary information for those who need services for appropriate professional tourist guides -where n how to hire them-, but actively promote all members to tourist industry stockholders worldwide as well.

HPI’s day-to-day running is the responsibilities of the executive board of DPP, DPD, DPC whose members are elected by delegates in convention held every four years.
It is highly important to note that taking a position on the Executive Board one must fully understand that such a position means complete involvement, dedication and long hours of work. Executive Board Members who are elected must be actively practicing tourist guides and they are not full or partially tour operators, or tourist guide employers. The official language of the Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia is Bahasa Indonesia. However, the HPI 2006-2010 Executive Board manages to provide the following languages: English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Russia, Korean, Chinese, and more to come.

The Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia is dedicated and committed to:

• Establish contact with: tourist guide members of Indonesia, tourism training institutes and reinforce their professional ties,

• Represent professional tourist guides nationally, promote and protect their interests,

• Enhance the image of the profession and promote the use of local tourist guides (working on specific area) in all provinces of Indonesia,

• Promote a universal code of ethics and skills, elevate, encourage and establish the highest standards of professionalism;
